NYC-DEP contractors will perform forest management work at the New Croton Reservoir to improve forest conditions on both sides of NY-100from the Somers Town Line at the south to Muscoot Farm County Park at the north. The project will improve approximately 121 acres of City-owned forestland.
Forests in the corridor are threatened by age-related mortality, invasive vegetation, and climbing vines. To address these problems, the work will:
· Remove unhealthy trees to concentrate growth resources on the healthiest trees;
· Remove vines and invasive vegetation to protect existing trees and provide growing space for new trees;
· Plant native trees where gaps in the forest canopy exist;
· Protect newly planted trees with deer exclusion fencing or tree tubes (location dependent).
Work is anticipated to begin on April 1, 2025, and continue through Spring 2026. During this time period, we ask that motorists and recreational users please use caution while in the area. Fishing areas will closed during periods of active work. Current NYC-DEP recreation area closures can be viewed here: https://www.nyc.gov/site/dep/recreation/fishing.page
